Winemaking notes: in 2011 the wines of Fiefs Vendeens were promoted to appellation status. Chatonnay is one of five sub-zones required to use the appellation. The vines are certified biologique and are a blend of Cabernet Franc, Gamay Noir and Négrette grown on red clay, schist and limestone. “The commune of Chantonnay lies just over 30km (19 miles) to the east of La Roche-sur-Yon. This large commune has the blend makeup of predominantly Cabernet France with Négrette can also figure with minor roles allowed from Pinor Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Gamay.”

Tasting note: the Fiefs Vendeens Rouge is medium purple in color with a clean nose of medium+ intensity with aromas of violet, mulberry, boysenberry, black plum, pipe tobacco and wet leaves. On the palate this wine is dry with medium+ acid, medium-minus tannin, medium alcohol, medium body, medium+ flavor intensity and a medium finish with flavors of violet, rose hip, green pepper, black plum, blueberry, tobacco and earth. Drink now through 2026, this wine is good: 8.9/10.
