13% abv, Earl Authentique, Loïc and Noël Bulliat, Villié-Morgon, imported by Planet Wine Inc., Richmond, VA. Cork closure: natural, under wax. Biodynamic calendar: flower day.
The family-owned 26-hectare Bulliat estate was founded in 1978 when the family purchased their first vines in the Beaujolais-Villages AOC. For this particular Morgon cuvée no sulfites are added and the vineyards are Ecocert certified organic. 100% Gamay Noir is planted on 4ha and has been farmed organically since 2013. The soils are schist and granite with a southeast exposure and the vines average 40 years of age on steep aspect with a 40% gradient. The grapes are hand harvested whole cluster and vinified by gravity for a semi-carbonic maceration in cement tanks with natural yeast and aged in stainless steel tanks.
Tasting note: this wine is medium garnet in color with a clean nose of medium+ intensity with aromas of jasmine, violets, red plum, damson, boysenberry, clay and chalk powder. On the palate the acid is medium+, tannins are medium+, alcohol is medium, body is medium+, flavor intensity medium+ and the finish is medium with flavors of lilac, gardenia, blueberry, ripe strawberry, Mirabelle plum, grilled peaches, pink peppercorn sassafras, cream of buratta, toasted pumpkin seeds, bacon fat. This wine has a huge floral lunch or aroma and flavor, great balance, loads of complex flavors and has held up incredibly well for a sulfite free product, it’s drinking lovely now but could hold steady for another 10 years; outstanding: 9.7/10. This is magical stuff, simple some of the best Cru Beaujolais I have encountered.
