This Moulin-à-Vent from Maison Mommessin is 100% de-stemmed Gamay Noir aged for 10 months in oak barrels and 7 months in wooden vat after assemblage. Mommessin is an interesting project, the wines are high quality but they do little to none of the winemaking in house; they work with partner properties to purchase Cru Beaujolais wine that is vinified at each property and overlooked personally by their technical director, Florent Georger, who has his hand in the winemaking processes. The results are often very good to outstanding and the wines for their ‘Les Grandes Mises’ (the great places) range are produced using traditional Bourgogne winemaking techniques and no shortcuts such as carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration. Being that 2018 was the latest in a succession of high quality vintages for Cru wines from Beaujolais, I was expecting this to be big and complex and it did not disappoint!
Tasting note: The Moulin-à-Vent is deep ruby in color with a clean nose of medium intensity with aromas of rose petals, plum, blueberry, and wet granite stone. On the palate this wine is dry with medium+ acid, high tannins, medium+ body, medium alcohol, medium+ flavor intensity and a medium+ finish flavors of jasmin, rosehip, blueberry, Japanese plum, açaí, leather, cedar spice, and grilled peaches. This has a lot going on and will hold well through 2032. This wine is very good, almost outstanding: 9.4/10.
