I was expecting much from this mature Fitou in the Roussillon region on the lower French Mediterranean coast. In the land of Catalan, Grenache Noir reigns supreme, but the addition of 30% Mourvedre and 30% Syrah brought this wine some lovely structure and straying power. It was a steal for the price, and I would take a flyer on a more recent vintage given the chance.
Tasting note: aged in tank, the Cuvée Darius is still bursting with primary aromas of wild strawberry and and roasted coffee beans with some tertiary aromas of stewed blackberry, sage, white pepper and tar. On the palate it’s dry with medium plus acidity, medium tannins, plenty of body and some flavors of lavender game and much more strawberry on the medium+ finish. Drink now; good, 8.8/10.
